Communications departments are grappling with the transition from print-based writing assignments to digital Generative AI, and multimodal composition. Here, I believe in mastering the tools of literacy so that the tools don't rule over you as an educator. Educators experimenting with AI are all teachers-in-training learning to master a new literacy tool, exploring its affordances and constraints. Educators can learn alongside students in a classroom setting becoming co-creators of their education, influencing their careers and lives ahead of them equipping them with modern tools of literacy including nuanced technologies like AI.
Utilizing Claude, an AI digital literacy tool, I created five prompts with input/output, followed by tweaking inputs for more effective outputs. The purpose of this assignment is to design instructor materials that are teachable assignments, assess their viability, and document the information to critically evaluate the affordances and constraints of the digital AI technology that students and educators have open access to. Connecting first-hand experience that discusses ethical usage behind generative output, the changing role in authorship, accessibility, and the role of pedagogy surrounding AI.
What is the CORE framework? The CORE method is a reliable acronym designed to guide generative prompts to give more accurate output.
Context: Give the prompt some context about what it is you are looking for. From the perspective that the input is given to a secretary.
Output: Explicitly tell the prompt what you are looking for, what your goals are, and what you want it to give you. Use as much detail as you can.
Role: Give the prompt a role, a perspective to use like a teacher or educator, and be specific.
Examples: use specific examples, book titles, dates, authors, and upload information depending on the platform.
Overall, the more information you give an AI tool, the better your result.
